SMI does not use timber from Vietnam's natural forests but only exploits rubber wood from plantations in Vietnam. All rubber trees are cut down and replaced after 20 years of latex extraction as the trees are no longer useful to exploit and the timber is then used for carpentry. SMI only buys the trunks (not the branches) since they are the most valuable part of the tree.
